Flowers in Hawaii: The 9 Coolest Flowers to Discover in Maui

You are currently viewing Flowers in Hawaii: The 9 Coolest Flowers to Discover in Maui

Sometimes you need to remove yourself from your surroundings to reinvigorate and inspire yourself. Or so they say! So, that is exactly what we tried to do this past week. We went to Maui to see all of the different types of produce and flowers we could find, and how the produce and flowers in Hawaii could be compared to what can be found in California.

I am a big believer in using the outdoors as a form of happiness, and that includes stopping to smell the roses! Below are the most exciting flowers I could find (no roses included).

Table of Contents

King Proteas

When I first saw these plants, they had not yet bloomed and looked like pretty gray cones. However, when I stumbled upon the pink and white blooming flowers, they were absolutely breathtaking!

Pincushion Proteas

The Pincushion Protea flowers have a similar shape to the King Protea, but are unique in their own way.

Plumerias

Plumeria flowers come in multiple colors and different colored flowers can even bloom on one tree. These flowers are a cultural flower that have traditionally been used in leis, decorations and at luaus.  Men and women put them behind their left ear if they are taken and behind their right ear if they are single.

Fuchsia

I have seen these flowers before in California, but they are just so pretty! I also found two versions of them in Maui, a white version and a purple version.

Dancing Lady Orchids

These beautiful yellow orchids are not your typical orchid that we are used to seeing in the grocery store. Not only are they a lot more vibrant, but also have a distinct smell.

Orange Bromeliads

This was the first time I have seen orange bromeliad flowers. I saw them in a few different places and they are just so beautiful and eye-catching.

Ama’u Ferns

I have never seen a fern, let alone a plant, that looks like this before! How cool is it that the ends naturally curl on their own?!

Ginger

Ginger is commonly found as a landscape plant/flower in the Maui landscape. In the examples below, Blue Ginger is on the left and Red Tower Ginger is on the right.

Orchid Trees

We never get to see orchids on an actual tree. This Orchid Tree originated in Hong Kong and produces magical flowers.

These were just a few of my favorites that I got to see while exploring different botanical gardens, farms and the everyday landscape during my time in Maui. Needless to say, I really enjoyed the flowers in Hawaii!
