I think we can all agree that pumpkins have become the most common Halloween decoration. From an agricultural standpoint, it is a bit sad that there are not more pumpkins consumed versus carved, but it does still add an additional market for pumpkin growers. A few years ago while I was doing an audit, the grower mentioned that they grow pink pumpkins to sell for Halloween to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. After doing some additional research, I found several more pumpkin growers that contribute to Breast Cancer Awareness Month. It turns out, there is a pink pumpkin movement!
Who Is Behind the Pink Pumpkins?
The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation is a non-profit organization that is behind the Porcelain Doll Pink Pumpkin. The Porcelain Doll F1 pink pumpkins are a hybrid that were bred by DP Seeds, LLC to be pink, and to still serve the purpose of a pumpkin. The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation created the pink pumpkin movement to raise money for breast cancer, as well as to raise awareness.
The Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation partners with growers that grow and sell their Porcelain Doll Pink Pumpkins. In return, for every one of their pink pumpkins sold, they give $0.25 to the Pink Pumpkin Patch Foundation. They started in 2012, and to date, they have donated over $110,000 to different breast cancer research groups.
How Do Growers Get Involved with the Pink Pumpkin Movement?
It is a very simple process for growers to get involved. All they have to do is fill out a pledge agreeing to pay the foundation $0.25 for every pumpkin sold. This is not limited to just commercial growers. FFA and 4H groups have also signed up as growers.
Home growers can also purchase the Porcelain Doll F1 seeds from seed suppliers to grow at home.
How Can You Find One of These Pink Pumpkins?
Surprisingly, they seem to be grown everywhere, especially on the east coast! Based on the grower map on their website (a screen shot taken on 03/12/2022 found below), you can click on the different icons and find a grower near you.
This program has expanded quickly, but also has a lot more room for growth. If you can find a grower in your region, I encourage you to check them out. You will not only be finding a unique Halloween decoration for your house, but will also be doing some good while you are at it!
