How to Make Homemade Cashew Butter!

Cashew butter is one of the greatest things I have come across in some time! And, homemade cashew butter is even better! I really stumbled upon cashew butter in a local health food store, tried it, and just kept going back to buy it. Once I realized I was only returning to that store for the cashew butter, since none of my other local grocers carry it, I decided it was time to take things into my own hands!

Cashew Butter Ingredients

On the container of the cashew butter that I loved so much, there were only two ingredients: cashews and oil. So, I bought a container of unsalted cashews (if you like them salted, buy the salted kind) and used some avocado oil (I have tried vegetable oil and that works too). That is it, just those two ingredients.

Making Homemade Cashew Butter

The process is as follows:

  • Add 3 cups of cashews to a food processor or mixer (I use this food processor)
  • Blend them until they are chopped into small pieces. You can do it in intervals, where you add a bit at a time and blend, but that is only really needed if you are using a smaller mixer.
  • Add 1/2 cup of avocado oil. Don’t have avocado oil? Switch it up and try another oil you have on hand (except for olive oil because it alters the flavor profile too much). The only thing to remember is that nuts naturally have their own oil content, so the oil you add is mixing with the nut oil flavor and after some trial and error, you will find what you like best!
  • Blend until it is as creamy or as chunky as desired. That is what is so great about making the cashew butter (or any nut butter, really) at home because you get to decide the end texture.

Regarding the nut to oil ratio, start out with the baseline above and if you want it creamier, slowly add in more oil and if you want it chunkier, slowly add in more cashews.

I am convinced I am on to something here because we have been eating this up like crazy for the past few years, making a new batch every 4-5 days or so, and my kids, husband and I all love this homemade version!

Where to Buy Cashews

There are a few things to consider when buying cashews: freshness and price. So, you want to make sure you are buying cashews (or any other nut) from a place where the inventory moves frequently. For that reason, I like to go to Costco and buy their bulk bags of unsalted cashews, or to Trader Joe’s and buy their unsalted cashew pieces. In both cases, the prices are some of the best I have found, and the inventory is always moving at those two places.

How to Eat Cashew Butter

The simple answer would be to say that you could eat it just like any other nut butter, which is true. However, my three favorite ways to eat cashew butter are:

  • Cashew butter on bread
  • Cashew butter with apples and bananas
  • Cashew butter spread on a heated tortilla (wrap it and eat it like a burrito)

How to Store Cashew Butter

Once you have prepared it, it needs to be stored in an airtight container in the fridge.

Homemade Cashew Butter

An easy, 2-ingredient recipe to make the most delicious nut butter you have ever tasted!
Total Time 5 minutes

Equipment

  • 1 Food Processor

Ingredients

  • 3 cups cashews
  • 1/2 cup avocado oil

Instructions

  • Place all 3 cups of cashews into your food processor.
  • Grind them up until they are a fine powder (approximately 2 minutes)
  • Pour in the 1/2 cup of avocado oil over the ground up cashews.
  • Mix until creamy (1-2 minutes). This step is important because you know how creamy or crunchy that you like your nut butter. So, if this mixture is not creamy enough for you, add a bit more avocado oil. If it is too creamy for you, add a bit more cashews in and blend until it reaches your desired creaminess.
